The social responsibility of producers manifests itself, among other things, in controlling and constantly striving to reduce the negative impact of manufactured products on the environment. For this reason, Aluron is undertaking various initiatives in this area. The company subjected its facade and window and door systems to a verification process some time ago. As a result of this action, it was the first system company in Poland to obtain an environmental certificate - a "Type III Environmental Product Declaration" (EPD) according to the latest EN 15804+A2. standard in force from 2022.

The EPD is an environmental statement based on life cycle analysis (LCA). It is a particularly useful document for architects, designers and builders. It describes the properties of the products they use and their impact on the environment over their entire life cycle. The environmental declaration issued on the basis of the latest standard is more precise compared to previous versions, as it does not only include phases A1-A3. It covers far more phases of the product life cycle: A1-A3, A4, C1-C4 and D.

What is an EPD?

An EPD is a certificate of assessment of the environmental impact of a product at the various stages of its manufacture and life cycle. For this reason, it covers the phases from the sourcing of materials, through the production stage, transport, assembly, use, to disposal and recycling. In addition, it quantifies the extraction of raw materials, the energy intensity of the production process (energy consumption), water consumption and waste generation. The EPD allows the environmental profile to be compared, and products to be evaluated and selected in terms of the verified environmental performance of a product or service.

Benefits of the EPD declaration

In all buildings that apply for sustainable building certifications: DGNB, LEED, BREEAM, contractors should use products with an EPD declaration. Firstly, this document increases a building's chances of obtaining BREEAM or LEED certification. Secondly, it allows customers to make informed consumer decisions, leading to a reduction in the environmental impact of the building.
